Pregnancy risks: dry mouth symptom

Hormonal changes and increased water intake requirements during pregnancy can cause a dry mouth. A dry mouth is a very common symptom during pregnancy. This is due to the fact that during pregnancy, more water is needed to help the development of the baby.

Effects of pregnancy on oral health

These hormonal changes during pregnancy may have different effects on oral health. Aside from the dry mouth syndrome, you may suffer from gingivitis and even the loss of a tooth. Some particular conditions during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes, can also cause a dry mouth.

Other symptoms of the dry mouth syndrome

Beyond the sensation of dryness, dry mouth syndrome may have other symptoms, such as:

  • Constant sore throat.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Dryness within the nose.
  • Burning sensation in the throat and mouth.
  • Speech problems, hoarseness
  • Changes in the sense of taste and the appearance of tooth decay.

Sore throat during pregnancy

As we indicated, dry mouth syndrome can lead to symptoms such as a sore throat during pregnancy, as a result of a mouth with little saliva and scant hydration. 

In this special period, if you have frequent sore throats, you should pay special attention if you intend to take medication to relieve them. It will always be advisable to request an appointment with your doctor and if you detect dry mouth syndrome, consult a dentist.

Remedies for dry mouth syndrome during pregnancy

In many cases, the remedies applied at home are sufficient to treat a dry mouth. These remedies, which are safe during pregnancy, include:

  • Chewing sugar-free gum.
  • Eating sugar-free sweets.
  • Drinking lots of water.
  • Using a humidifier at night.
  • Avoiding ingesta de cafeína.
  • Keeping good oral hygiene.
