What is paediatric dentistry?

Updated May 12, 2026

Paediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases in children from early childhood through to the onset of puberty. The aim of paediatric dentistry treatments is to accompany the growth and development of a correct dentition in order to detect and prevent severe oral health problems in adulthood. At this age it is very important to establish good oral health and hygiene habits, as well as to respond immediately to problems that may arise, in many cases involving the temporary dentition or milk teeth.

Among the diseases and problems that can arise at these stages and require immediate attention, tooth decay and dental trauma are the most notable.

Types of paediatric dentistry treatments

Paediatric dentistry treatments can vary depending on whether they are carried out on milk teeth or permanent teeth, and also depend on the severity of the problem to be treated.

Step by step

Paediatric dentistry treatment phases

It is important to bear in mind that paediatric dentistry is, to a great extent, preventive in nature. It is recommended that the first dental visit take place when the child turns one year old.

1

First visit and preventive check-up

The specialist will check the state of upper and lower jaw growth, the emergence of teeth and rule out possible early diseases such as tooth decay. Parents will resolve their doubts about hygiene, brushing and harmful habits. Up to 3 years of age, an annual visit is recommended; from 5 years, every 6 months.

2

Treatment of dental caries

Tooth decay is the most frequent disease in childhood. When it only affects the enamel, a filling is applied. If it is deeper, a metal crown is placed so as not to prevent the emergence of the remaining teeth. When it affects the pulp, a pulpotomy may be necessary. Extraction is always the last option; if carried out on a milk tooth, a space maintainer is placed for the permanent tooth.

3

Care for dental trauma

Among children and adolescents, bumps resulting in cracks, chips or breaks are common. For small cracks, polishing is usually sufficient. For larger ones, filling material can be used. For chips or breaks, solutions range from filling to extraction, always assessed by the paediatric dentist.

4

Interceptive orthodontics

Interceptive orthodontics corrects the position of the jaws and teeth when it is easiest to do so. It acts on growth to prevent the permanent teeth from ending up in harmful positions and to avoid the need for more complex orthodontic treatment in adulthood.

Reviews that support our expertise in paediatric dentistry

Asto

FAQs about paediatric dentistry

Paediatric dentistry focuses on the dental health of children, from infancy through to adolescence. It includes the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and restoration of dental problems in children. It is important to ensure teeth develop properly and to instil healthy habits from an early age.

It is recommended that the first visit takes place when the baby's first tooth appears or, at the latest, on their first birthday. This helps detect possible early problems and accustoms the child to the dental clinic environment.

A paediatric dentist offers regular check-ups, cleanings, decay treatments, jaw orthopaedics, management of oral habits such as thumb-sucking, and specialised care for children with special medical or developmental needs.

Paediatric dentists are trained to work with children and use child-friendly techniques to reduce anxiety: explaining procedures in language the child can understand, using distractions, offering positive reinforcement and working with parents to prepare the child.

Parents can encourage good dental hygiene habits, teach brushing and flossing, provide a balanced diet limiting sugar, and ensure the child attends regular dental check-ups. Collaboration with the paediatric dentist is key.
