What is at-home teeth whitening?

At-home teeth whitening is an aesthetic treatment that lightens tooth enamel colour, eliminating stains and discolouration from home. It is carried out using personalised mouth guards made to measure for each patient's teeth.

The treatment consists of placing a whitening gel inside the mouth guards similar to that used in laser or LED whitening methods. As this gel is not as potent, the guards can be worn for a longer period, according to the dentist's recommendation for each case.

Stages of at-home teeth whitening

Taking impressions and fabricating mouth guards

Impressions of the upper and lower dental arch are taken with the latest scanner and 3D photography technology or with conventional impressions. With these measurements, personalised mouth guards are made to fit each tooth perfectly, keeping the whitening gel in contact with them at all times.

Instructions and start of home treatment

During the second appointment, once the custom mouth guards for the patient's teeth are ready, the dentist provides the relevant instructions on how to carry out the treatment. Normally, the first time the mouth guards and whitening gel are applied, it is done at the clinic so the procedure is completely clear.

At-home teeth whitening treatment requires more commitment from the patient, with the aim of minimising the number of clinic visits. To achieve a whiter, more perfect smile within the estimated timeframe, the patient must follow the dentist's instructions exactly, maintaining excellent oral hygiene and avoiding bad habits that are counterproductive to the whitening treatment, such as smoking or consuming beverages and foods with high levels of sugars and colourants.
