What is it

What are aesthetic self-ligating brackets?

Aesthetic self-ligating brackets are a type of bracket that does not require ligatures or elastic bands. Their archwires, metal wires that connect the brackets and exert the force needed to move the teeth, are held in place by a clip that applies sufficient pressure to return the tooth to a position that ensures the correction of dental defects. Furthermore, this type of bracket is made from a material that goes unnoticed by others, such as resin or polycarbonate.

The colour, texture and size of these materials blend perfectly with the teeth, giving the impression that the patient is not undergoing any orthodontic treatment. This is a major difference from traditional metal brackets, which are clearly visible. In terms of effectiveness, aesthetic self-ligating brackets guarantee similar efficacy to other classic orthodontic treatments, with the advantage of generating considerably less friction, which allows the teeth to align more quickly.

Types of aesthetic self-ligating brackets

Aesthetic self-ligating brackets are distinguished according to the type of archwire ligation. In terms of their design, they are classified into two types: active and passive self-ligating brackets.

Stages of treatment with aesthetic self-ligating brackets

1

Full case assessment

The patient attends the clinic to correct some type of dental deficiency or irregular bite. The specialist carries out all necessary tests, supported by X-rays, intraoral and extraoral photographs, or 3D moulds. Using all this evidence, a personalised diagnosis is made regarding the most suitable orthodontic system.

2

Preparation and placement of the brackets

The teeth are prepared with a thorough cleaning and drying of the area. The brackets are then bonded to the outer surface of the teeth, with the special adhesive hardened using a professional light lamp. Once correct positioning has been confirmed, the archwire is placed along with the closing clips that will hold it to the bracket.

3

Alignment and levelling of the teeth

Work is carried out on the alignment and levelling of the teeth to correct problems such as dental crowding.

4

Bite correction

The teeth are positioned correctly, from front to back and in a vertical direction.

5

Space closure

Any spaces between the teeth are closed to achieve perfect alignment.

6

Finishing and completion

Minor adjustments are made to perfect the position of the teeth, equalising the roots, fine-tuning individual tooth positions or correcting midline discrepancies.

7

Removal of the brackets

Once all treatment objectives have been achieved, the brackets are removed.

8

Retention phase.

In order to maintain the results of the treatment, the specialist recommends the use of retainers to preserve the new position of the teeth, preventing them from shifting back to an undesired position.

Reviews that support our expertise in aesthetic self-ligating brackets

Alejandra

FAQs about aesthetic self-ligating brackets

Aesthetic self-ligating brackets are a type of orthodontic appliance that does not require ligatures or elastic bands to hold the archwire in place. They are made from materials such as resin or polycarbonate, which mimic the colour of the teeth. These brackets enable effective dental correction with a more aesthetic appearance than traditional brackets.

The main difference is their appearance. Aesthetic self-ligating brackets are made from transparent or tooth-coloured materials, making them considerably more discreet than metal self-ligating brackets. Both types use the same self-closing system without ligatures, but aesthetic brackets tend to be a more expensive option due to their materials.

Yes, aesthetic self-ligating brackets offer the same effectiveness as metal brackets in terms of dental correction. The only difference is their appearance, as aesthetic brackets are more discreet, but the self-closing mechanism and the tooth alignment process are the same.

Treatment duration varies from patient to patient. However, while a conventional orthodontic treatment can last between 18 and 36 months, with self-ligating brackets this can be reduced by up to 12 months.

Although some patients may experience discomfort after placement or adjustments, aesthetic self-ligating brackets are generally more comfortable than traditional ones. The absence of ligatures and the reduction in friction between the archwire and the brackets minimise the usual discomfort associated with orthodontics.

Oral hygiene is essential during treatment. You should brush your teeth after every meal and use an interdental brush.

It is recommended to avoid hard, sticky or crunchy foods that could damage or dislodge the brackets.

Although aesthetic self-ligating brackets are designed to be stain-resistant, the consumption of certain foods or drinks such as coffee, tea or red wine can affect their appearance. Maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding these foods can help prevent staining.
